The Greatest Gig Your Never Saw….
Gig Review: The Sullivan Sees, London 1st February 2025
In the heart of a packed, intimate London club – a modest venue with a mere 100-capacity – The Sullivan Sees delivered one of the most electric and genre-defying live performances I have ever witnessed. Frontman Mick Cooper, dressed in a striking lavender suit and hat, embodied the essence of cool, offering the crowd a metaphorical hug before launching into a set that moved from rock to blues, lounge, funk, and beyond with ease. The eclectic and multi-generational nature of the band, whose members hail from the UK, Italy, Argentina, Africa, China, the US, and France, was evident in the music’s diverse blend of styles, making each song feel like an invitation to experience a new world.
Opening with a raucous rendition of *Problems*, the crowd was instantly hooked by the band’s unique chemistry. From the indie-rock energy of *Set Adrift* to the sultry blues of *Lies* and of *For Goodness Sake*, the first half of the set was a masterclass in musical versatility. It’s rare to see a band that can balance these genres without ever feeling out of place, but The Sullivan Sees have that rare ability.
The lounge-infused vibes of *Kind of Cool* and *A Summer in Heaven* were a particular highlight, with keyboardist Nate and occasional lounge pianist Dan Harris setting the scene for a more introspective moment in an otherwise high-octane show. It was here that the band allowed themselves to drift into a more subtle groove, giving the audience a breather before diving into the next whirlwind of sound. These tracks were laced with a nostalgic, almost cinematic feel, yet were modern in their execution, reminding us just how timeless good music can be.
Of course, no set would be complete without the thumping energy of the band’s dance tracks. *She’s My Queen* and *The Break* got the room moving, while the almost raucous *Tralalalalalala*—which they saved for last—was a proper floor-filler, overflowing with a chaotic, yet joyous madness. The crowd, who had been hanging on every note, responded with an enthusiasm that made it clear they were absolutely living for it.
A surprise treat came in the form of the new tracks from their forthcoming, yet-to-be-titled album. The short but raucous romp *Break Up Song* had a raw energy to it that suggested this album will be just as exciting as their debut *Identity Problems*. *Total Redemption*, set for release on 24th February, and *The Long Walk* were equally as well received, with fans eagerly hating on every note. The sense of anticipation surrounding the band’s next chapter was palpable, and if this performance was anything to go by, the upcoming album will be one to watch.
The atmosphere was, without a doubt, a key part of the experience. The small, close-knit venue allowed for an intense connection between the band and the audience, creating a sense of community that can sometimes get lost in larger arenas. The crowd—composed of old and new fans alike—were fully immersed in every moment, and there was an undeniable sense of unity in the room as the band took us on a musical journey.
Mick Cooper’s stage presence is magnetic. His ability to switch from charming crooner to impassioned rocker, paired with his genuine connection to the audience, made for a performance that was as much about the feeling as it was about the music. He was never too far from his bandmates, who seemed to function as a well-oiled machine, each member bringing something special to the table. From Mattia S’ masterful guitar solos to Faustus’s pounding basslines, Lorenzo’s flawless drumming, and the rich layers of brass and backing vocals from Lizzy and Friends, this was a band that truly clicked on every level.
Mic [US] made his mark with his effortlessly cool rap skills, which were particularly impressive on tracks like *I Want You*, *Strange Times*, and *Tralalalalala*, where his flow added a fresh dynamic to the band’s already diverse sound. It’s rare to see rap seamlessly blended with indie rock and blues in such an organic way, but here it felt like a perfect match.
The set concluded with an unexpected twist—the dance version of *Thank You for Your Kindness*, which sent the crowd into a frenzy. As the beats pulsed through the room, it felt like a fitting end to a show that had everything: the highs of live music, the joy of discovery, and the kind of energy that only a band like The Sullivan Sees can deliver.
The two-hour performance felt like it flew by. It was a rare kind of gig, where every moment felt fresh, every song was a new adventure, and the audience never stopped dancing. If you weren’t already a fan of The Sullivan Sees, you would have left that night a devoted one. If the new album lives up to this live show, it’s going to be one for the books. If you get the chance to see The Sullivan Sees take it – you will not regret it. This was the best gig you never saw.
